You know eating fruit and vegetables is helpful. But did you know it can also make you look good?

People who increased their intake over just six weeks developed a healthy glow and appeared more attractive, researchers found.

Scientists at St Andrews University found eating them subtly increased yellow and red pigments in the volunteers’ skin.

They monitored the food intake of 35 people and took pictures of their faces, arms and hands using a sensitive camera at the start, and after three and six weeks.

Increasing their intake of greens by 2.9 portions a day was found to make the person look healthier and an extra 3.3 portion could enhance their attractiveness, when their photographs were rated by others.

Fruit and vegetables are rich in carotenoids(類胡蘿卜素), which are known to protect against cell damage from pollution and UV rays, and can also prevent age-related diseases including heart disease and cancer.

But while it was known eating extreme amounts of certain vegetables such as carrots could turn skin orange, it was not known a small increase was perceptible to others and was seen as appealing.

A camera measured changes to the skin’s redness, yellowness and lightness, and found it significantly changed in people who naturally increased their intake. These changes were not evident at three weeks.

Using light sensors, the researchers showed these red and yellow hues(色調,色相) were linked with the levels of carotenoids in their skin.

There are hundreds of carotenoids but those thought to have the most dramatic effect are lycopene(番茄紅素)which gives tomatoes and red peppers their red color - and beta-carotene found in carrots as well as broccoli, squash, and spinach.

Skin color is also affected by chemicals called polyphenols(多酚), found in apples, blueberries and cherries, which cause blood rush to the skin surface.

Youth volunteers from Beijing University visited Song tang Hospital, a care clinic for the aged and dying patients, during the second Global Youth Service Day on April 21.

??????? Thirty student volunteers from the university’s School of International Studies sat at the beds of the patients in their specially decorated “care huts”. They talked with them and gave massages (按摩)to patients kept in their beds.

“Even though they are suffering a lot, the majority of the elderly people want to talk to us. Each of them has a lot of life experiences and philosophies to share. Instead of doing them a favor, I felt I was gaining a valuable lesson. Said Mao Xiaohua, another third - year student.

As a result of pollution, Lake Erie, on the borders of the USA and Canada, is now without any living things.

Pollution in water is not simply a matter of “poisons” killing large numbers of fish overnight, Very often the effects of pollution are not noticed for many months or years because the first organisms(生物體)to be affected are either plants or plankton. But these organisms are the food of fish and birds and other creatures. When this food disappears, the fish and birds die too. In this way a whole food chain can be wiped out, and it’s not until dead fish and water birds are seen at the river’s edge or on the seashore that people realize what is happening.

Where do the substances which pollute the water come from? There are two main sources of sewage(污水)and industrial waste . As more detergent(洗滌劑)is used in the home, so more of it is finally put into our rivers, lakes and seas . Detergents harm water birds, dissolving the natural substances which keep their feathers water - proof. Sewage itself, if not properly treated, makes the water dirty and prevents all forms of life in rivers and the sea from receiving the oxygen they need. Industrial waste is even more harmful as there are many highly poisonous things in it, such as copper and lead(鉛).

So, if we want to stop this pollution, the answer is simple: sewage and industrial waste must be made clear before flowing into the water . It may already be too late to save some rivers and lakes, but others can still be saved if the correct action is taken at once.

1.Pollution of water is noticed________.

A. when the first organisms are affected

B. when a good many fish and birds die

C. when poisonous things are poured into water

D. as soon as the balance of nature is destroyed

D. make special room in the sea for our rubbish

Have you ever wondered how your favorite NBA team received its famous name? All NBA teams have an interesting story or a history behind their names. Some of the names reflect the city's culture or history, others came from previous owners and many were selected through "Name the Team" contests.

For teams like Los Angeles and Utah, the names were not always a reflection of the city. Even though Los Angeles has no lakes, the Laker name has been a city treasure for almost 40 years. Before going to Los Angeles, the team originated in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1948, team officials chose the name for its direct relationship to the state's motto, "The Land of 10,000 Lakes." The team name went unchanged after moving to Los Angeles in 1960.

Because Utah's team originated in New Orleans, Louisiana, it was called the Jazz. In 1974, New Orleans club officials chose the name to represent the city for its reputation as the "jazz capital of the world." The name stayed with the team even after finding a new home in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1979.

The Chicago Bull's original owner, Richard Klein, named the team the Bulls. He picked the name because a fighting bull is relentless, and never quits. Klein, who founded the club in1966, believed these qualities were necessary for a championship team and hoped his Chicago athletes would live up to the team name. A belief that Bulls----winner of the six NBA championships have definitely followed.

In 1967, the Indian Pacers selected their team name in a different way from most other teams. Their decision was based on what they wanted to accomplish in the NBA. Team officials chose the Pacers name because the organization wanted to set the "pace" in professional basketball

1.Which can be the best title for this passage?

A. History of NBA??? B. Stories behind the names of NBA Teams

C. Famous NBA Teams??? D. Interesting Stories about NBA

2.Los Angeles’ team is named “the Laker” because ____________.

A. Los Angeles is a city of lakes

B. it was named after a city treasure

C. the team got this name in another city, which had a lot of lakes

3.“Jazz capital of the world” refers to ___________.

A. New Orleans??? B. Salt Lake City

C. Los Angeles??? D. Minneapolis

We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen? When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy my luck? And Paul-why didn't pick up that he was friendly just because I had a car? When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it's too late.

Why do we go wrong about our friends or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don't really listen we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, You're a lucky dog. That's being friendly. But lucky dog? There's a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn't see it himself. But bringing in the dog bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that the doesn't think you deserve your luck.

Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn't important. It's telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven't got a date for Saturday night.

How can you tell the real meaning behind someone's words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says agree with the tone of voice? His posture(姿態)? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people to you may save another mistake.

1.This passage is mainly about?????????????? .

A. how to interpret what people say

B. what to do when you listen to others talking

C. how to avoid mistakes when you communicate with people

D. Why we go wrong with people sometimes

2.According to the author, the reason why we go wrong about our friends is that????????? .

A. we fail to listen carefully when they talk

B. people tend to be annoyed when we check what they say

C. people usually state one thing but means another

D. we tend to doubt what our friends say

3.In the second paragraph, the underlined word it refers to????????????? .

A. being friendly??? B. lucky dog

C. a bit of envy??? D. your luck

4.When we listen to a person talking, the most important thing for us to do is ???????? .

A. notice the way the person is talking

B. take a good look at the person talking

C. mind his tone, his posture and the look in his eyes

D. examine the real meaning of what he says based on his manner, his tone and his posture

A survey basing on 1,000 students found that 80% of senior students sleep less than nine hours every night. One main reason lies at students’ bad habits. Too much homework is given by school teachers is another main cause. Some students are absent-minded while doing their homework, and some wasting their after-class time. The third cause is that some students have to get up earlier on weekday to get to school that was far away from home. Experts think an amount of homework for the students should be cut down. Beside, teachers should encourage their students make good use of their spare time. Only in this way can the students improve our study efficiency.

A.You can keep a record of what you do.

B. You can record your costs.

C. You can plan your spending.

D. You can set savings goals

E. You can move money out of your savings account.

F. However, some people find it hard to save money.

G. They can make saving money much easier.

It is widely acknowledged that nearly every kid might come across some kind of school bullying(欺侮), however, the age at which kids were first bullied could influence how strongly they are affected, suggests a new study. And, surprisingly, it is not the youngest kids who are hurt the most in the long term.

Bullying can have long-lasting effects, but particularly when it begins in adolescence(青春期), the researchers say, people subjected to either verbal or physical bullying are known to be at greater risk of developing depression, anxiety disorders or to behave violently. But not everyone reacts in this way.

Children who were bullied for the first time before they hit adolescence seem to get over it, but those who are bullied for the first time later on in adolescence seem to become more aggressive(富有攻擊性的) or are more likely to turn to drinking as a means of coping with it. These are the conclusions of psychologists Matthew Newman and colleagues of Texas at Austin, US.

The team gave questionnaires to nearly 1,500 college students about their experience of physical and psychological bullying before adolescence-before high school-and in late adolescence-at high school. They assessed mood and mental state, judging by signs of anxiety or depression, such as sleeplessness. The group was also questioned about how they would react to certain challenges, such as humiliation.

People who were bullied all showed slightly higher levels of stress. But while those bullied earlier in life seemed to respond normally to provocation(煽動), people bullied for the first time late in adolescence are more withdrawn and sensitive to violence.

There are also sex differences between those bullied for the first time during adolescence: females are more likely to react aggressively when provoked and males are much more likely to turn to drinking to escape bad situations. The best solution in all cases was strong social support, whether from friends, family or school. Those with no one to share their problems with suffered the most.

So perhaps it is best not to shelter children completely from bullying early on, suggests Newman, “They may get stressed, but unhealthy coping really jumps out when they are bullied for the first time later on.”

1.What determines the degree of bullying’s effect on people according to the study?

A. The reason why they are bullied.

B. The place where they are first bullied.

C. The person who first bullies them.

D. The age at which they are first bullied.

2.What may happen to those first bullied later on in adolescence according to Newman and his colleagues?

A. They seem to easily get over the effect of bullying.

B. Some are likely to be more aggressive.

C. Most of them will respond to bullying normally.

D. Most of them are afraid of sharing their problems.

3.The sex differences between people bullied for the first time during adolescence are reflected in _______.

A. the support they get from the society

B. the effect bullying has on them

C. the way they react to provocation

D. the type of bullying they receive

Of course, she wasn’t really my aunt and, out of fear, I never called her that to her face. I only referred to her as “My Aunt Fannie” because the name always made my father laugh quietly and gave my mother cause to look strictly at both of us—at me for being disrespectful of my elder and at my father for encouraging my bad behavior. I enjoyed both reactions so I looked for every opportunity to work the name into as many conversations as possible.

As a young woman, my mother had worked in the kitchen of a large Victorian farmhouse. During those years my mother helped Aunt Fanny make the best blueberry jam ever tasted by anyone in Glenfield. She was well-known for her jam and for never sharing the recipe(食譜) with others. Even though my mother knew the recipe by heart, as long as Aunt Fannie was alive, she never made the jam without Aunt Fannie in our kitchen to direct the process and keep the secret.

Each August, my mother would prepare me for Aunt Fannie’s visit. One year, after I had helped with the jam process Aunt Fannie gave me a coin and then made me promise that I would never spend it. “Hold onto this coin,” she said, “and someday you will be rich. I still have my very first coin, given to me by my grandmother.” So I kept the coin in a small box and waited to become rich.

I now have the blueberry jam recipe and the coin from Aunt Fannie. In people’s eyes Aunt Fannie’s success resulted from that secret recipe. But to me, it was just a common recipe. Neither have made me become a rich person, but I keep them as reminders to hold onto the valuable things in life. Money can make you feel rich for a while, but it is the relationships and the memories of time spent with friends and family that truly leave you wealthy. And that is a fortune that anyone can build.

1.Why did the author always use the name “My Aunt Fannie” in conversations?

A. She was frightened of Aunt Fannie.??? B. She enjoyed her parents’ reactions.

C. She liked Aunt Fannie’s recipe.??? D. She greatly respected “Aunt Fannie”.

2.The underlined word “she” in Paragraph 2 refers to ______.

A. Aunt Fannie??? B. the author’s grandmother

C. the author’s mother??? D. Aunt Fannie’s grandmother

3.In the last paragraph, the author encourages readers to ________.

A. hold onto the first coin in life

B. make as many friends as possible

C. spend more time with family and friends

D. make money with their own hands

4.What could be the best title for this passage?

A. The Key to Success??? B. A Fortune Built from a Coin

C. Blueberry Jam Recipe??? D. A Relationship of Trust

There are some people who seem to always be surrounded by friends, and there are others who always seem to be standing on the outside, looking in at the crowds of friends. If you are one of the outsiders, it is time to break out of your shell and start making new friends. 1.

1. Be yourself. Nobody likes a phony(虛偽的人). In fact, if you aren’t yourself, others won’t become friends with you. When the time comes that you feel comfortable enough to act like yourself again, you may not be well received, because you are a totally different person.2.

2. Use technology. 3. For instance, Weibo is a great place to meet new people. It creates experiences and you get to meet like-minded people who share your interests.

3. Start with people you know. Reach out and contact new friends, and reconnect with old friends you haven’t seen in a long time. Don’t forget about friends of friends. You may connect with some really cool people just by hanging out with your friends and their friends. 4. If you stay home, you aren’t going to meet people.

4. Keep in touch. 5. With the Internet and social media, there is absolutely no need to worry about that these days. Look up old friends and contact them.

A. There are all kinds of online groups that you can join.

B. Knowing others well is very important.

C. Therefore, let people get to know the real you.

D. If you are invited to go out, go.

E. All too often, people lose touch with one another.

F. Here are some tips that will help.

G. You need to trust yourself, whatever happens.

One evening, author Neil’s son was angry. Neil had said one of those things that parents say, like “isn’t it time you were in bed.” His son looked up at him, angry and said, “I wish I didn’t have a dad! I wish I had … a goldfish!” That conversation gave birth to Neil’s book, “The Day I Swapped My Dad for Two Goldfish”. The book is a funny adventure of a son searching for the dad he swapped.

Whether they realize it or not, fathers play an important role in their children’s development. Roland Warren, Director of the National Fatherhood Initiative, says that, “The shape of their dads has a role in the kids’ soul.” I agree. We live in the best of times and the worst of times for fatherhood. We live in the best of times because fathers who are engaged in their child’s life spend more time than fathers of any previous generation. We live in the worst of times because there are still millions of children who continue to miss the regular presence of Dad.

What difference does a dad make? Are they really that important? For the most part, studies have proved clearly that fathers, whether they live with their children or not, matter in the lives of their children. When fathers are present, they provide economic support for their children and caregiving responsibilities. Well-fathered children are shown to be more emotionally intelligent and socially successful as adults. When fathers are absent, their absence may negatively influence children’s academic achievement, general behavioural adjustment and anger management, especially in males.

Yet just being physically present isn’t enough to be a great father. It is important that a dad be warm and emotionally available to his child. Author and researcher, John Gottman, describes this kind of father as an “emotion coaching father”. Emotion coaches are parents who listen to their children’s feelings, see the sharing of feelings as an opportunity for intimacy(親密). It is not just the mere presence of fathers that matters, but how they are present. Most children long for and need a loving, devoted and responsible father.

1.The author introduces his topic by ______.

A. presenting the results of studies??? B. telling a story

C. making a comparison??? D. interviewing some experts

2.What does the author mean in Paragraph 2 by saying “We live in the worst of times … ”?

A. Today’s fathers don’t care about their children’s emotions.

B. Lots of children’s fathers have to work every day.

C. Lots of children’s fathers are absent from their lives.

D. Today’s fathers don’t have care giving responsibilities.

3.According to the text, a well-fathered child is more likely to _______.

A. lose control of anger??? B. obtain high academic achievement

C. have low emotional intelligence??? D. have good social skills

4.We can learn from the text that an “emotion coaching father” is a father who ______.

A. gives economic support to his child??? B. shares his child’s emotions

C. tries to change his child’s emotions??? D. is always available to his child

The discussion on renewable energy has been going on for at least a decade and people have relied on fossil fuels almost entirely for more than a century. However, the situation when fossil fuels were the most efficient and the cheapest source of energy has been left far in the past. Many countries such as Germany and Sweden have already made significant efforts to fix this situation, employing numerous power plants working on the renewable resources of energy. The most effective among these resources is geothermal(地熱的)energy.

Geothermal energy does not depend on the world’s economic and political situation as strongly as fossil fuels do. Besides, extracting(提煉)fossil fuels adds to the price of energy produced from them. Therefore, geothermal energy is much cheaper than traditional ones, saving up to 80% of the costs over fossil fuels.

Being a renewable resource, geothermal energy produces less waste and pollution than traditional energy sources. In geothermal systems, carbon dioxide makes up about 10% of air produced. Overall, in order to produce the electricity that can be used for one hour, the geothermal systems produce 0.1 pound of carbon dioxide and other harmful gases. For a comparison, a power plant producing from gas produces up to 2 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, and those power plants that work on coal(煤)produce an astonishing 3.6 pounds of greenhouse gases.

Low costs is another reason why using geothermal power plants should be the first choice for many countries. Geothermal heat systems require 25% to 50% less energy for work compared with the traditional systems for heating or cooling. Besides, geothermal equipment is less big: due to the very nature of geothermal energy, geothermal power plants have only a few moving parts, all of which can be easily sheltered inside a relatively small building. What’s more, the life span of geothermal equipment is rather long. All these make geothermal power stations easy to build and keep.

1.Fossil fuels are more expensive than geothermal energy partly because _______.

A. it is free to use geothermal energy

B. the production of fossil fuels costs a lot

C. fossil fuels are nearly used up

D. geothermal energy doesn’t depend on political situation

2.According to Paragraph 3, what can be concluded from the comparison?

A. Geothermal energy is environmentally friendly.

B. Gas and coal are often used to produce electricity.

C. Coal is much more efficient than gas.

D. The geothermal systems don’t produce harmful gases.

3.Geothermal equipment is usually not as big as that of traditional energy because of______.

A. the life span of geothermal equipment??? B. geothermal power plants

C. the nature of geothermal energy??? D. the small buildings

4.What is the main idea of this passage?

A. Many countries have benefited from geothermal energy.

B. Geothermal energy is well accepted.

C. Fossil fuels are being run out of.

D. Geothermal energy has many advantages.

On the morning of May 20, 1927, Charles A. Lindbergh Jr. took off from a muddy airfield in New York and headed for Paris. During the first fourteen hours of flying, he had had some anxious moments. Sleet had gathered on the wings of the plane and the fog was so thick that he could hardly see the tips of the wings. However, he had come across equally dangerous flying conditions before. Of course, now that he was over the ocean, his parachute(降落傘)was useless. He had only one choice: he had to go on.

Although he had waited a long time to make this trip, he did not feel strange or nervous. He was accustomed to flying alone, and he had flown this route in his imagination many times. The idea of flying across the Atlantic had occurred to him one night when he had been carrying the mail between St. Louis and Chicago. That night, he told himself that a solo non-stop flight between New York and Paris was possible. He knew that airplanes capable of making the long flight over the ocean could be built. A man of skill and endurance could make his dream come true.

As he was recalling that night, he reduced the altitude of the plane. Close to the surface of the ocean, he found that the ice on the wings began to melt and the fog disappeared. For the time being, at least, he was safe. The steady sound of the motor seemed like music in his ears. He had perfect confidence in his plane because he knew that there was not a more dependable plane than his. The Ryan Aircraft Company had constructed the plane to meet his special needs. He had worked with the chief engineer of the company, Donald Hall, to produce the airplane as rapidly as possible. Although Hall had worked with the basic design of the Ryan airplane, he had had to make many modifications. As a result, it was a very special airplane. He had named it “The Spirit of St. Louis,” in honour of the St. Louis businessmen whose financial backing had made the trip possible. Besides their money, he had invested all of his own savings, which came to two thousand dollars, in the venture.

At 12 :10 on the afternoon of May 21, Lindbergh caught sight of the coast of Ireland. Now that the flight was almost over, he began to relax a little. Finally, after thirty-four hours in the air without sleep, he arrived at Le Bourget Field, in Paris.

1.According to Paragraph 2, Lindbergh Jr. didn’t feel nervous about the flight because of the following reasons EXCEPT that _________.

A. he was used to flying alone??? B. he had waited a long time for the trip

C. he had imagined flying the route many times??? D. his plane was specially designed

2.What can we infer from Paragraph 3?

A. The pilot listened to music as he reduced the altitude of the plane.

B. The trip was made possible thanks to the financial support from some businessmen.

C. The plane got its name in memory of a non-stop trip.

D. The chief engineer designed the airplane independently to meet the pilot’s needs.

3.What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 mean?

A. beautiful decorations??? B. regular repairs

C. small changes??? D. careful arrangements

4.Which of the following would be the best title?

A. Wings Across the Atlantic

B. A Solo Non-stop Flight of 24 Hours

C. The Spirit of St. Louis

D. An Outstanding Pilot—Charles A. Lindbergh Jr.

China now has 52 sites included on the UNESCO World Heritage List, which was established to safeguard unique and irreplaceable cultural and natural sites around the world. Let’s have a look at some of them, which may give you some clues on your next travel plan.

Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor

The Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor is located in Lintong county, near Xi’an city, capital of Shaanxi province. A total of 8,000 life-size terracotta warriors, chariots and horses, and hundreds of bronze weapons have been unearthed from it. Many state leaders and experts worldwide believe that the discovery of the mausoleum is a major archeological find and can be called the eighth wonder of the world, paralleling Egypt’s pyramids.

Kulangsu, a Historic International Settlement

Gulangyu Island, known in the local dialect as Kulangsu, is located on the entry of the Jiulong River, facing the city of Xiamen. The island was occupied by at least a dozen countries, including Great Britain, France and Japan. As a result, Western culture grew rapidly there in the 19th century, especially music. With such a harmonious blend of Western music and Eastern culture, Gulangyu is naturally referred to as the “island of music”. It is famous for its outstanding musicians and musical instruments.
